ASICS Gel Nimbus 27 vs 28 Comparison

nimbus 27 vs 28

The ASICS Gel Nimbus 28 is the latest version of ASICS‘ premium cushioned neutral running shoe, following the popular Gel Nimbus 27.

Both models are designed around comfort, cushioning and protection, making them appealing for easy runs, long-distance training and runners who prefer a softer, more protective ride.

The Gel Nimbus 28 is more than a cosmetic update. ASICS has made several changes to the shoe, most notably reducing its weight and altering the overall geometry. The result is a shoe that feels less bulky and more versatile while retaining the highly cushioned character of the Nimbus range.

Design and Construction

At first glance, the Gel Nimbus 27 and 28 look very similar. Both are highly cushioned road-running shoes with a large amount of foam underneath the foot.

The Gel Nimbus 27 was designed much around comfort. Its substantial midsole provides plenty of protection from the impact of running, but the shoe can feel somewhat bulky for runners who prefer a lighter or more responsive daily trainer.

The Gel Nimbus 28 takes a slightly different approach. ASICS has reduced the weight while changing the geometry of the shoe to create a smoother transition through the stride. Independent testing also found the 28 to feel less bottom-heavy than its predecessor.

Cushioning

Cushioning is arguably the main reason runners choose the Gel Nimbus range. Both shoes offer a cushioned ride and plush feel, with ASICS’ PureGEL technology positioned in the heel and a large amount of FF BLAST cushioning underneath the foot.

The Gel Nimbus 27 has a snug and plush feel. It is well suited to runners who want to reduce the sensation of impact during easy and longer runs.

The Gel Nimbus 28 retains this character but feels somewhat more balanced. Although the shoe is slightly lower at the heel in independent measurements, it still provides great cushioning.

The 27 may appeal to runners who simply want the most traditional, plush Nimbus experience. Also consider the 28 combines high levels of cushioning with a smoother and lighter ride.

Weight

The Gel Nimbus 27 is a fairly heavy running shoe, which is understandable given its large midsole and highly cushioned construction.

The Gel Nimbus 28 is a little lighter. Independent testing measured the Gel Nimbus 27 at around 301.7 g and the Gel Nimbus 28 at around 272.9 g. That’s a difference of almost 29 g per shoe.

That may not sound enormous on paper, but removing that amount of weight from a heavily cushioned shoe can make a noticeable difference during longer runs.

Outsole and Traction

The outsole is another area where ASICS has continued to focus on providing dependable grip for everyday road running.

The Gel Nimbus 28 uses an ASICSGRIP Hybrid outsole, designed to provide traction while also supporting durability.

For normal road running, pavement and everyday training, the outsole should provide more than enough grip for most runners.

Neither shoe is intended to be a dedicated trail shoe, so runners regularly tackling muddy or technical trails should choose something better designed for that environment.

Upper and Fit

The Gel Nimbus 27 offers a comfortable upper designed to provide a secure fit without sacrificing the plush character of the shoe.

The Gel Nimbus 28 introduces an engineered knit upper, giving the shoe a soft and comfortable feel around the foot. The upper is designed to provide a secure fit while maintaining the premium, comfort-focused character of the Nimbus range.

Both models are available in different width options, making them a better fit which improves comfort.. For runners with wider feet, it is still worth trying the shoe on before purchasing where possible. A highly cushioned running shoe can feel very comfortable underneath the foot while still being too narrow through the upper for the runner.

Long-Distance Running

Both running shoes make strong choices for long-distance running. The cushioning is particularly useful when you’re spending a long time on your feet, and the Nimbus design is aimed at reducing the harsh sensation that some runners experience in less-cushioned shoes.

The Gel Nimbus 27 has the advantage if your priority is simply comfort and protection.

The Gel Nimbus 28, however, is arguably the better all-round option because its lower weight makes it less demanding over longer distances.

For runners preparing for a marathon or simply building up their weekly mileage, that reduction in weight can be appealing.

Final Verdict

The ASICS Gel Nimbus 28 is the better overall running shoe, but the difference between the two generations isn’t enormous.

ASICS hasn’t completely reinvented the Nimbus. Instead, the company has refined the design by reducing weight and improving the overall ride.

That makes the Gel Nimbus 28 a more versatile option while retaining the excellent cushioning that runners have come to expect from the range.

The Gel Nimbus 27 remains a great choice, especially if you can find it at a discounted price. For runners who prioritize cushioning and don’t mind carrying a little extra weight, there is still plenty to like. For everyone else, the Gel Nimbus 28 gets the nod.
